What it means when a harness is too heavy

Many dogs’ owners purchase a harness without thinking about the weight. Most of the harnesses for small dogs are far too heavy. The models displayed in the shops weight 280g in average.
For a small dog that weights between 3 to 4kg, this represents 8% of its total bodyweight. That’s a serious load.

Comparing this percentage to 89kg average human male weight means that this person would carry a load of 7.12kg. Literally wearing a coat of more than 7kg.

No one would go for a walk with such a heavy coat; better to consider a light one, isn’t it?

Then let’s calculate further: an average coat weights around 1.7kg. Which approximately corresponds to 1.9% of the bodyweight. Transferring this to a small dog, the weight result is 66.85g; slightly more than the half of a chocolate bar. This leads to an acceptable weight for a dog harness.
